Anonymous asked: Lauren, After the PSBA meeting (you were an excellent speaker, thank you!) we talked a bit about the weird seizure condition of your bees last year. My bees are now doing the same thing. Around 8 bees at any given time, unable to fly, stumbling around on th, getting knocked on their backs, easy prey for yellow jackets which tear off their thoraxes (horrible). I wish I could give them a strength-boosting cocktail. No varroa at all. Pls let me know if you hear more about this. Thank you!
I’m sorry for the delay, but I use the other site now at www.urbanbeeprojectseattle.com.
My email address is: lmmontgomery@comcast.net, contact me there and I’ll work with you on the problem.

The Art of Natural Beekeeping - A class for beginners

The first natural beekeeping class was so fruitful and fun that I’ve decided to do a second one for those who couldn’t attend. This class will be on Saturday, March 5th, from 10am - 3 pm. It is designed as an introduction to beekeeping from a natural perspective, and emphasizes knowledge about the life history of bees so that one can steward them without interfering with their natural inclinations. It includes a practical how-to of installing a new hive, and presents the various benefits and drawbacks of different kinds of hives. My goal is to provide you the basic knowledge and familiarity to become a new beekeeper this spring. Please bring a lunch. Cost: $30. Teens and children under 18 are free. Call 206-790-0464 or email lmmontgomery@comcast.net to register. The class will be held in north east Seattle.
This class is purposefully scheduled the day after the first showing of the movie “Queen of the Sun” at the Seattle Film Forum. This is an excellent film about the dire situation of honeybees in the world today from a natural perspective. See our post below about the potluck before the film.

“The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own.”

The Origin
The Urban Bee Project was created on Ground Hog Day, February 2nd, 2011 in Seattle Washington. Rolande Chesebro, a garden designer, Laurie Gardner an educator and gardener, and Lauren Montgomery, a beekeeper and gardener joined together to promote a vibrant and healthy habitat for bees and people. Our project is twofold: to promote gardening for bees and other pollinators, and to discourage chemical pesticide use and encourage green alternatives. We will accomplish these goals through community awareness, education and events.
Our first two events:
* Introduction to Natural Beekeeping Class, February 19th, 10am - 3pm. Everything you need to know to start beekeeping this spring. Register call Lauren, 206-790-0464. $30, bring a lunch.
* Potluck and Movie: Queen of the Sun - March 4th, 5:30 potluck, 7:15 movie at the film forum. Full details on the film are below.
Northwest Film Forum presents
Queen of the Sun March 4-10 at 7:15 and 9:15pm daily
(Taggart Siegel, USA, 2010, 82 min)
When documentary filmmaker Taggart Siegel released his debut feature The Real Dirt on Farmer John, he knew he was onto something special. A new wave of local environmental concern since that film’s release has become nearly commonplace in Seattle. Queen Of the Sun, like Farmer John, provides a profound, alternative examination of the tragic global bee crisis, known as Colony Collapse Disorder. Featuring Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk, and Vandana Shiva, Queen of the Sun reveals both the problems and the solutions in reforming a culture to be in balance with nature.
